Fishing in Wales: Barry Cold Knap

Barry Description:

Barry has beach fishing at Cold Knap, Whitmore Bay, Jacksons Bay, Little Island Bay and Watch House Bay. There is also wall fishing at the Old Harbour and the Docks and rock marks, two of the better known being Friar’s Point and Bendrick Rock.
Cold Knap is mostly clean and sandy, with shingle above the tide mark, fishing onto similar.
Whitmore Bay is the most popular tourist beach, It is sand with rocks either end, fishing onto a mainly clean bottom. It is rarely fished, other nearby marks being more productive.
Jacksons Bay is a sandy beach with rocks down one side and a causeway, part of the docks entrance, down the other, fishing onto mainly clean ground.
Little Island Bay is sand onto a clean bed but is rarely fished, nearby Friar’s Point is more popular.
Watch House Bay is sandy with rocks either end, fishing onto mainly clean ground.
The Old Harbour fishes onto mainly clean ground.
The Docks fishes onto a silty bed.
Friar’s Point is rock, fishing onto mainly clean ground.
Bendrick Rock fishes onto a mainly clean bottom.

Fish include bass, smoothounds, rays, conger. dabs, whiting, cod, mullet, pouting, flounder, plaice, wrasse.

Cold Knap is on the west side of Barry and is well signposted in the town. There is a car park at the beach, payable in season.
For Whitmore Bay, follow the signs for Barry Island. Turn right just before the fair ground. There is parking near the beach.
Jacksons Bay is reached by following the signs for Barry Island. Carry straight on past the fair ground, turn right at the T-junction then follow the road round to the left. There is parking near the beach.
For Little Island Bay, follow the signs for Barry Island. Turn right just before the fair ground. There is parking near the beach.
To reach Watch House Bay, follow the signs for Cold Knap. At the T-junction by the beach, turn left, follow the road round and park near the beach.
For the Old Harbour, follow the signs for Barry Island. Turn left just before the fair ground and follow the road round to a large car park.
The Docks are signposted from the town.
For Friar’s Point, follow the signs for Barry Island. Turn right just before the fair ground. There is parking near the point and a gentle walk out to the point.
To reach Bendrick Rock, take the B4267 from Barry to Sully. At a large roundabout, turn down Hayes Road. Go straight on at the first roundabout and turn left at the second. Go straight across the next roundabout and park as near to the rocks as possible.
