Fishing In Wales - Llandrindod Lake

Llandrindod Wells Lake Description:

Llandrindod Wells Lake is a 14 acre lake containing carp, roach & bream. The lake, which has always been a popular venue for fishermen, has been drained and cleaned out in the past, new planting carried out and fish stocks re-introduced. There is an abundance of wild life to observe, with a wide variety of ducks, geese and swans. The island in the middle of the lake was for many years used by fishermen, but now provides an undisturbed habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife.

  1. this lake had a very bad fishkill, powys council have destroyed this fishery and it is now aweed chocked water that looks a mess. the council have failed to restock or improve this fishery for 4years!

    • Hi Mick,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I’m personally very sad to hear that the old lake has become such a poor fishery. As it happens I grew up in Llandrindod and spent many happy days in the 70s catching skimmers, roach and bream, and even the odd half-decent carp. I even saw a 20+ lb pike being weighed in at the boathouse once.

Between the lake and the River Ithon, it was a dream place for a young angler to grow up. I could easily walk or cycle to my fishing spots and enjoy the sport and the outdoors.

Let’s hope Powys CC will do something about it, because it’s all very well having a tourist attraction for walking and boating, but the angling community will use a good venue all year round and in my day people used to come from far and wide for the fishing, bringing valuable revenue into the town.

  2. Dear David,
Sadly, I have to agree with Mick. I moved to this area in 2009 when I retired.
Recently, I decided to take up coarse fishing again and have encouraged my grandchildren to follow suit.
I understand the Llandrindod Lake was a prized location for carp in years gone by, attracting anglers from all over the country. What a pity that this important local facility has been left to go to rack and ruin. I agree that the weed is a total disaster!
My grandson and I spent hours clearing a swim one morning only to have all the weed drift back in again by the following day. I suspect these otherwise excellent angling facilities have been ruined by good intentions concerning the local wildlife?
High time Powys CC did something positive to restore this facility for anglers as well as other users. Meanwhile, I have taken to fishing the River Wye in Builth where at least I can catch fish!
    Yours sincerely,

    Peter A. Clark

    • Hi Peter,

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your comments.

I sadly doubt that PCC is unaware of the feelings of anglers about the terrible demise of the lake as a top class fishing venue.

Surely it can’t be that they simply can’t be bothered, can it?! I guess it’s budgetary constraints are winning out over maintaining a valuable resource to Llandrindod’s tourism and local amenity facilities.

If I were still a resident of Llandrindod I would mount a crusade to have them take notice!

      Regards,
      David (Editor)
